Raku bowls
By Paul Soldner.
Raku was not pursued seriously in the West until the 1960's.
"To most people... the name Paul Soldner is inevitably linked with... raku."
From article 'Raku as I know it', Ceramic Review magazine 1973.
Soldner's semi-accidental development of putting his pots into a reduction atmosphere after firing known as smoking, is not a feature of Japanese Raku, but is now an aspect that most would not consider raku to be complete without...
Increasing numbers of artists experimenting with raku like this has expanded the range of what can be described as raku... No clear definition exists.
Many artists handle the process with little direct reference to the origins or context of Japanese 'raku' - it has become considered as just another method of finishing ceramic objects.
